The vineyards of Collio

Book Experiences

IN THESE HILLS YOU CAN STILL SMELL THE SEA, BUT THE WAVES ARE THE GREEN TERRACES OF VINEYARDS.

The friable rock of Collio was once the sea bed. Compact layers of clay and sand crumble in your hand, leaving a hint of brine and tiny fossils. And it’s the same feeling when you taste the white wines produced in these hills, home to the oldest of the Borgo Conventi vineyards, growing Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Ribolla Gialla, Friulano and Merlot.

THE MICROCLIMATE

Surrounded by the Julian Alps and the mountains of Slovenia to the north and less than 40 km from the Adriatic Sea, Collio has a particular microclimate that favours viticulture.

THE SOIL

The Collio hills are characterised by a marl and sandstone soil of oceanic origin, known as Ponca. Over time, the various layers have created a geologically unique soil, ideal for vines.
